about
This French Canadian reel is a mélange of two cheeky Normandian folk songs with medieval origins. The chorus, J’ai Vu Le Loup (I Saw the Wolf), offers a sly political commentary by suggesting that the wolf, the fox, and the hare (representing the tax-collecting entities of the king, the landlord, and the church) are in secret cahoots. The verses are lifted from J’ai Trop Grand Peur des Loups (I’m Too Afraid of Wolves), also known as M'en Revenant de la Vendée (As I Was Returning from Vendée), a popular rowing song among voyageurs (fur trappers) of the 18th and 19th centuries. As with the animals in J’ai Vu Le Loup, the three knights in this tale do not seem entirely trustworthy.
lyrics
Deux à cheval et l'autre à pied;
Celui d'à pied m'a demandé,
"Chez nous, monsieur, si vous voulez;
"Vous y trouv'rez un bon souper."
J'amais je m'en irai chez nous:
Moi, j'ai trop grande peur des loups.
